Ultrasound Guided Pedal Access of the Anterior Tibial Artery

Dr. Steve Henao utilizes ultrasound-guided pedal access to achieve retrograde anterior tibial artery access. Dr. Henao demonstrates his techniques to properly identify, target and stick the distal anterior tibial artery, including:

  1. While visualizing the target under ultrasound, repeated compression and release of the ultrasound probe against the skin will give the appearance of the anterior tibial veins “winking”. The anterior tibial artery, however, will not “wink” under compression - this is the target for access.
  2. Confirm anterior tibial artery access by visualizing the needle inside the anterior tibial artery under ultrasound.
